Week 9 almost in the books!!!

Today ends week 9, day 64 on NS. It's been very good so far. My third order shipped on July 1st, so I should get it this week some time. I still have enough food for another week at least. For some strange reason though, I have run out of lunches. I still have breakfast and dinner, but lunch only one left. I wonder if I got shorted on my last order. I didn't even check the count, but I will be sure to this time.

My ear had totally cleared up the last few days and I was feeling fine. Today I woke up and it's ringing again, which is how the other episodes started. I wonder if it could be the A/C? I noticed today on my way to work that my right ear (the bad one) was very cold from my car's A/C blowing on it. Maybe that is causing a problem? We'll see. It's not bad, but I hope it doesn't return either.

Tomorrow begins week 10 on NS. I have eaten out quite a bit, might be why I have so many breakfast entrees. But I am always true to my healthy eating. I've had 1 1/2 bad meals during the last 10 weeks so that isn't too bad.

The weather here is still kicking my butt. I don't know why I'm suffering from the heat more this year. I've been in Vegas 20 years, you think I would be used to it by now. But the humidity was up the last week and that really hurts me.

I've been to the gym three times last week. I will get it up to four times a week by August and then hopefully 5 times a week by Sept. I want to gradually increase my workouts per week.

Do any of NS'ers out that are veterans longer than me have any tales. I am wondering if you started to waver from NS as time went on, you start substituting more of your own foods or if anything else you might want to add. I'm still holding pretty strong and true to the NS plan. Though I find myself not using the little book as much anymore to mark off my protein, salad, fruit and carbs. I really need to get back to more of that bookkeeping.

Sounds like you're doing a great job of changing your habits. I am no veteran, but I started using my own foods after about 3 months. But when I get in a real rut, I go back to NS foods, and I always lose more when I use them. I think using your own foods is hard because we absent-mindedly add a little something here and a little something there. It all adds up. But if you keep a good food journal, it's totally do-able. I keep track of everything when I'm trying to lose using my own foods just to be safe.

Emily,

Thanks for the advice on using my own foods. I think this 3rd shipment I get this week will be my last one from NS. But I also think I will start using my foods about a week to 10 days before I run out so that if need be I can go back on NS. Thanks for the advice.

Mike.

I started adding in my own food to mix it up. And I started using lots of prepackaged things like Lean Pockets, Boca products (they make a decent lasagna and chili), tuna and turkey burgers and similar things. There are lots of options out there once you learn what you should and should not eat.

The big thing for me was dealing with eating out which I do quite often. I just learned to read the menu and ask questions. I think I make pretty good choices overall. I still use NS food often, but mix in a lot of my own stuff. The key really is making the good choice.

Keeping a journal really does help too if you are true to it. That means accounting for everything, including the little things the slip in every so often.

Hope this helps you. Good luck.

First let me say that one time NS shorted me 12 lunches - it is entirely possible that they did forget to include some of yours too. In my case I noticed it because of two reasons - 1) they were all the same item - my favorite fettucini - so I had purposefully ordered 12 so I could have 3 a week 2) I always check in my food - the easiest way to do this I find is to just count how many of each meal they sent - should be 28 of each (unless you ordered extras). If there are then you're all set quantity wise. If not at least you'll know what meal to look at and then just have to figure out which items for that meal they shorted you.

I also want to say that in all of the posts and blogs I read it seems to be the people on the west coast whose orders get messed up - items missing, wrong items, no bears when there should be, no food diary enclosed etc. My food comes from the Horsham, PA site and there is rarely a problem - and the problem is usually with "extras" ... which brings me to the next part of my comment and your question:

I just finished week 48 on NS, which means 11 - 4 week periods. During this time I have received 10 autoships, and currently have one complete order that I have only inventoried but not used any of the foods from yet, plus I have about 2 additional weeks of food that I am currently using. So in 11 months I've used about 8.5 shipments of food instead of 11.

I agree with Bob, it tended to get boring after about 5 months of "dieting" during which time I only twice had dinner out or deviated from the NS food plan (once an out of town trip, once at Thanksgiving).

What I tend to do now is push my autoship back 4 weeks the minute I get the shipment. Also what I do is go into my autoship order and order 28 extra breakfasts. What this does is allow me to have an NS breakfast every day for two months plus one other NS meal each day. Then I substitute my own food (frequently a McDonald's salad [260 to 370 calories] with one of their soft-serve low-fat ice creams [150] on the side). When I do this I completely wipe out all food choices for that meal by what I substitute - even if it doesn't match up exchange for exchange with the NS items. For instance if I have the McDonald's meal I just described I don't have bread or fruit with it, etc.

The other thing I do is treat NS lunches and dinners interchangable IF I have my own food for one meal. So in other words if I had the meal I described at McDonald's at lunchtime I might still have an NS LUNCH meal for dinner.

You will figure out a pattern that works for you like the rest of us have.

One thing I would harp on though (and I know you know this if you read my Sunday blog post) write everything down in your NS diary or other similar notebook. It doesn't have to be meticulous, I do quantity, item, calories - but you could just do calories or just item - anything so you remember what you have already eaten or can look back at it a few days or weeks later and review it if you want. I find sometimes repeating and emulating a previously good day or two helps boost the weight loss again when I am in a slump.

By the way if you call NS and ask them for extra diaries they will send you one or two. I do this all the time now especially since I only order every 8 weeks and the journals are for 4 weeks.

Best wishes.
